You need to prepare for a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test, before you can ride two wheeled vehicles legally. Although clothing and crash helmets have developed over time, to offer superior safety to riders, there’s still other road users to take into account. The objective of a CBT test is to increase your safety on the roads. There’s five parts to the test that mix riding skills with theoretical knowledge. Being aware of what these things entail beforehand, is the most effective way of preparing for a CBT test.
What the Test Consists of
Typically, the CBT exam is completed over a day and consists of five modules, including: eyesight check and introduction, training onsite, riding onsite, training on the road, and riding on the road.
Eyesight Check and Introduction
The eyesight check and intro does not need much explaining. You will be taught why the CBT exam is important, and what vehicles the exam allows you to operate. Also, you will get a schedule of activities for the remainder of the test. You will work through some documents, get your eyes tested and your licence inspected, and talk about the legalities of owning a two wheeled motorbike. If you do not have any gear of your own, this will be provided for you.
Training OnSite
You will go to a spacious outdoor area with your teacher, who will show you the motorbike. You will be shown the controls and spend time walking with the motorbike. This will accustom you to how it feels and moves, and get you used to how much it weighs. You will rehearse making use of the sidestand.
Riding OnSite
If the teacher thinks that you can progress at this stage, you will be permitted to sit in the bike’s saddle and fire up the engine. The teacher will watch you riding straight ahead, navigating bends, and stopping and starting. In all likelihood, you will ride around a circuit to get more familiar with the motorbike. While doing this, you can practice changing gears and keeping your balance.
Training on the Road
After you have learned how to ride and maneuver in open spaces, you will progress to road riding theory. Typically, this part happens inside a classroom, where the teacher will run through the Highway Code, road positioning, and the laws regarding motorbike riding, etc.
Riding on the Road
This is the best part of the exam: you will ride on the roads for real. Initially, you will wear a radio, so your teacher can instruct you while riding behind you. In most cases, this part of the exam goes on for a couple of hours. The teacher will watch you carefully, to check that you fully grasp the highway rules and can ride a motorbike safely.
